The company’s overall top 10 list features Rebecca Black at number one, with Google Plus, Ryan Dunn, Casey Anthony and Battlefield 3 rounding out the top five. iPhone 5 (which turned out to be the iPhone 4S) took sixth place, while British singer Adele, ?? ??, Steve Jobs and iPad 2 placing 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th, respectively. Interestingly, ?? ?? (TEPCO, owners of the Fukushima Daiichi power plant), was the first non-Latin term to make it to the global fastest-rising list.

“When looking at the data, it is fascinating to see the cultural fads and trends that took over the globe, from cupcakes (making top food lists in over a dozen countries) to the Dukan diet and high-profile weddings, but Google was used for much more than staying up to date on the sisters Middleton and Kardashian,” writes Google Fellow Amit Singhal.

“From local celebrities in Finland to Singaporeans looking for news on the revolutions in Egypt and Libya half a world away, people turned to Google to learn more about what was happening on the world stage. It wasn’t just the man-made moments that topped the charts this year, but also the natural disasters that literally shook the world, from Hurricane Irene in the U.S. to the earthquakes in Christchurch and Japan.”

Google’s 11th annual Zeitgeist covers a variety of different top 10 lists, including fastest rising, fastest falling, fastest rising on Google Maps, and fastest rising on Google News. The company’s top 10 fastest rising consumer electronics were Amazon’s Kindle Fire (#1), iPhone 4S (#2), Sidekick 4G (#3), Hp TouchPad (#4), Spb Shell 3D (#5), iPad 2 (#6), HTC Sensation (#7), Samsung Nexus Prime (#8), Sony Ngp (#9), and iPad 3 (#10).,news-13550.html
